Financial Controller

Controlling the finances of the Trust within the obligations and responsibilities of the Academies Financial Handbook whilst delivering exceptional financial advice to a range of stakeholders is a highly responsible role suited to an experienced Financial Controller, ideally with education and charity experience.

The role:
There is a full job description attached, but in summary, in close partnership with Sarah Howells our CFO you will be responsible for providing a best in class financial management service that includes:
• Governance – financial statements, financial reports, board papers and finance policies
• Leadership – of Regional Finance managers, Central Finance team, to oversee best practice delivery to our Academies and to be a centre of excellence for sound financial knowledge as required
• Systems & Processes – responsibility for our Financial Management System and its outputs in close partnership with Payroll
• HMRC – lead contact point and responsible for our tax position and VAT submissions
• Academy Support- oversee production of academy and national budgets through your team of Regional Finance Managers
• Reporting – timely, accurate and compliant for a range of recipients: DfE, Trustees, ESFA, Companies House
What we are looking for:
• Educated to Degree level with an accountancy qualification
• Great communication skills
• Previous senior level experience – ideally within education
• Substantial financial management experience of a large annual budget
• Staff supervisory/management experience
• Experience of financial management and governance within a company and/or charity framework.
• Knowledge and full understanding of the financial procedures and regulations that apply to Academy Trusts.
• Knowledge of Education funding streams
• Experience of leading in complex technically demanding areas of statutory or tax compliance
